Tree guards

Beginning with the first students from Einsiedeln visiting in 2006, we have regularly been planting young trees on the school grounds together with the students from Namwala. To ensure the growth of the trees, we were presented with two main challenges: water shortage and physical protection from pedestrians and hungry goats.

To solve the water supply problem, we installed a new water line on the school grounds. This pipe now covers the front part of the school area. For physical protection of the young trees, Brian Chilala constructed 85 cages costing 30 CHF each. These cages protect the trees for two years until they are large enough to withstand the challenges posed by the environment themselves. After that, the cages can be re-used for new plantings. This way, we hope to reforest the school grounds in the coming years.
